We’re living in the era of the vivacious, unapologetic “icy girl” — and we have Saweetie to thank for it. But don’t mistake this for just another TikTok aesthetic or trend you can co-opt; as the rapper detailed in a 2019 interview with Vice, being an icy girl is a way of life more so than a simple cosplay.

“I feel like an ‘Icy Girl’ is a hustler. She’s independent and unapologetic,” Saweetie explained in the interview, echoing themes that are all still omnipresent in her career, even six years on.

The rapper has seen a meteoric rise over the past decade, first debuting to mainstream success with her song “Icy Girl” in 2017 (aka the blueprint for the philosophy), and continuing to churn out a number of other hit ballads — like “My Type” and “Best Friend.” She’s also solidified herself as a marketing juggernaut, with brand collaborations that have ranged from a “Saweetie Meal” at McDonald’s to a viral campaign with Tinder, and most recently, a fashion collection with Forever 21.

Aptly named “Forever Naughty and Forever Nice,” the new collaboration attempts to recreate Saweetie’s bold style through the lens of affordable, retail-friendly pieces — think cozy sweaters, glam party dresses, and patterned combos galore. It also pays homage to the unapologetic nature of the O.G. icy girl, with a campaign teaser that parodies some of the online criticism Saweetie has received about her music in the past — with comments like “retail music for sure” or “it’s giving Forever 21 store playlist.” File this under: peak icy girl behavior.

“I grew up shopping at Forever21, so it feels surreal to team up with them on this amazing holiday collection,” Saweetie said in a release. “The pieces really capture the ‘Icy Girl’ aesthetic and will have everyone feeling their most fabulous self during the holidays.”
