Why Melania Trump Will Keep Barron Out of Campus Housing ‘for Now’ as He Adjusts to College Life in N.Y.C. (Exclusive)

Barron Trump won’t be living among his college peers any time in the near future, sources say.

In September, the son of President-elect Donald Trump and incoming first lady Melania Trump started his freshman year at New York University’s Stern School of Business in Lower Manhattan.

Several sources exclusively tell PEOPLE that with his mother’s guidance, Barron, 18, is navigating the new chapter in his life while living at Trump Tower, his family’s Midtown Manhattan residence.

“She will do everything she can to make sure Barron does well in school and is socially and mentally adjusted to his life as a college student,” a political source tells PEOPLE. “Living in a dorm in a college town isn’t in the stars for him at this point.”

The source adds, “Barron already has his own political ideas. It all needs to be monitored in light of the situation.”

With the Trump family’s divisiveness and Donald, 78, on the verge of becoming president, Melania, 54, feels that living at home — versus living in NYU housing — is Barron’s best option for the time being, a social source tells PEOPLE.

“Whether or not others think he is capable of being on his own, Melania feels it’s better to be around him as much as possible,” that source says. “I see that continuing.”

As she prepares to resume the role of first lady, Melania is focused on balancing her political duties with the needs of her son during this time, the political source says.

“Barron is in school all day, so she has plenty of time for official jobs as well as being there for her son when he needs her,” the political source tells PEOPLE.

The social source adds that this living situation may not be permanent throughout Barron’s college years, but is the best course of action “for now.”

“Every mother handles her children the way she feels best,” the source tells PEOPLE.

In a rare sit-down interview with Fox News in September, Melania shared that Barron wanted to live in the family’s N.Y.C. tower while attending classes.

“It was his decision to come here that he wants to be in New York and study in New York and live in his home, and I respect that,” Melania said, adding, “I hope he will have a great experience because his life is very different than any other 18, 19-year-old child.”

Melania commended her son for his strength, intelligence, knowledge and kindness, saying that he has grown into an “incredible young man.”
