Charles Shyer, a Hollywood director and Oscar-nominated writer, has died. He was 83.

Shyer’s daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer — who followed in his footsteps as a director and writer confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter.

Meyers-Shyer said her father dealt with a brief illness before his death at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 27. His official cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

A day later, Meyers-Shyer shared a throwback photo of Shyer on her Instagram Stories, alongside a heartfelt message. “1941-2024 🤍 A complete original,” she wrote.

A representative for Shyer did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Dec. 29.

Shyer and ex-wife Nancy Meyers welcomed daughter Annie Meyers-Shyer in July 1980, followed by Hallie in July 1987. The late star was also a father to daughter Sophia Shyer and son Jacob Shyer.

The Meyers-Shyer family said in a statement to Deadline, “It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father Charles Shyer’s passing.”

“His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind,” they continued. “We honor the extraordinary life he led and know there will never be another quite like him.”

Shyer and Meyers, 75, made a name for themselves throughout the 1980s with comedies such as Private Benjamin, Baby Boom and Irreconcilable Differences.
