A Florida landlord is facing murder charges after he allegedly shot and killed his tenant in a dispute over a thermostat.

According to an arrest report obtained by PEOPLE, Adam Louis Anson, 37, was charged with murder after he allegedly shot his tenant, identified by NBC Miami and CBS News Miami as 57-year-old Carlos Alberto Gonzalez.

The arrest report states that deputies from the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene in Westchester, located about 12 miles outside downtown Miami, at around 8:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Per the report, Anson approached Gonzalez’s apartment — located on the same property as his own house — holding a semiautomatic pistol and knocked on his window, trying to gain access to the unit. Anson allegedly wanted to change the hallway thermostat, the sheriff’s office said.

When Gonzalez opened his door for Anson, the 37-year-old forced his way inside the apartment and began punching him “unprovoked,” the sheriff’s office said.

The landlord allegedly dragged Gonzalez outside of the apartment to the property’s backyard and shot the 57-year-old “several times in the head,” per the arrest report.

Following the shooting, Anson went inside the apartment and changed the temperature before going back into his own home and calling 911.

During the 911 call, Anson told operators that Gonzalez tried to hit him and he claimed that the shooting was in self-defense, per the report.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Gonzalez with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the arrest report. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported Gonzalez to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, NBC Miami and CBS News Miami reported.

According to booking records, Anson was taken into custody on Jan. 25 and faces charges of second-degree murder and burglary with armed assault or battery. He is next set to appear in court on Monday, Jan. 27.
