Debbie Allen has been an icon of the stage and screen for more than four decades!

The multi-hyphenate, who turns 75 on Jan. 16, 2025, began dancing from an early age — a talent that would take her around the world, to the big screen and along the Great White Way.

Now, as she continues to run the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, star as Catherine Fox on Grey’s Anatomy, and be “Ma D” to her grandkids, here’s a look back at her impressive life and career in photos.

Debbie Allen was born on Jan. 16, 1950 in Houston, Texas. Her mom, Vivian Allen, now 101, is a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet and scholar while her father, Andrew, worked as a dentist (seen here with Debbie).

Allen showed her love for dance from a young age though growing up in Texas, “couldn’t go to dance class because I was Black,” she told Jennifer Hudson in 2023.

Instead, Vivian installed a ballet barre in their home and hired a dancer to come teach Allen and later, moved her children to Mexico City to escape the discrimination and racism they faced in the United States. There, Allen danced with Ballet Nacional de México, Backstage reported.

After the family returned to Houston, Debbie became the first Black dancer to join the Houston Ballet Foundation at age 14, Shondaland explained.

When Allen was ready to go to college, she was again faced with an uphill battle.

Though feeling confident about her audition to the North Carolina School of the Arts, she was not accepted because of her “body type.”

“That was just devastating,” she told PEOPLE in 2020. “It still hurts. It stopped me until my mother made me know that I could not have a pity party.”

She instead enrolled at Howard University before moving to New York City and kicking off her decades-long career on stage and screen.

She hit the Broadway stage again in 1978’s Ain’t Misbehavin’ and in 1980 starred as Anita in the 1980 revival of West Side Story, which earned Allen both a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk Award.

To add to her list of awards and accomplishments, Allen was named one of 2020’s Kennedy Center Honors.

“This is so much more than our nation’s Highest Artistic Award, it is a measure of how my footprint has resonated as a path of light over the years and in this time of tremendous uncertainty, fear, and search for hope,” she said in part of the honor.

Allen, who celebrates her 75th birthday on Jan. 16, 2025, continues to act, produce and direct, doing all three for Grey’s Anatomy.

Outside of performing, Allen keeps herself busy with the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, which she founded in the early 2000s with her husband.

“Debbie always talked about [how] at some point she wanted to create an academy where all kids are welcome — regardless of economic background, ethnicity, social standings,” Nixon told Café Mocha Radio in 2021 of the L.A. based non-profit. “She wanted a place for kids to dance if they wanted to dance.”
